  18. <p>     These are not the best of times for Argentina's President
  19. Carlos Menem. When his wife Zulema barricaded herself and their
  20. two children within the presidential residence, he prudently
  21. left the country for a European sojourn, though not before
  22. signing a decree giving himself sole authority over who is
  23. allowed inside. When he returned home, he ousted Zulema, who
  24. then made a melodramatic scene in front of TV cameras. But
  25. these troubles pale before a new problem confronting Menem.
  26. Legions of superstitious Argentines have become convinced he
  27. is cursed with a hex. The alleged evidence: several of his
  28. Cabinet ministers have died in office, and after Menem shook
  29. the hand of a driver before a powerboat race, the driver
  30. crashed and lost an arm. The clincher came when Menem showed
  31. up on the field with the Argentine soccer team the day before
  32. its World Cup match with Cameroon. The heavily favored South
  33. American team was then humiliated, 1-0. Menem has heard the
  34. talk that he brings bad luck and is said to be worried, since
  35. he is superstitious and regularly consults a fortune teller.
